extrinsic attenuation
Last modified: Monday, June 30, 2008

In fiber optic transmissions, extrinsic attenuation is one of two main categorized factors that cause attenuation (the reduction of signal strength during transmission). Extrinsic attenuation is caused by external factors, such as a bend in the optical fiber, called microbending or macrobending, which causes a reduction of optical power.

See also intrinsic attenuation.
