Intercast
Last modified: Thursday, March 29, 2001

A protocol created by Intel in 1996 for broadcasting information, such as Web pages and programs, along with television signals to a PC. With Intercast, a user can watch television on one portion of a PC monitor while receiving relevant information often about the broadcast from the Web on another. To browse the Web for information not being broadcast or not stored on the PC, however, the user must have Internet access through an Internet Service Provider ; Intercast transmits in only one direction.

For example, CNN uses Intercast to broadcast text and links to its Web pages that accompany its TV coverage. To receive Intercast, a user needs a TV tuner add-in card and Intel Intercast Viewer software.
