imagesetter
Last modified: Thursday, June 26, 2008
A typesetting device that produces very high-resolutionoutput on paper or film. Imagesetters are too expensive for homes or most offices, but you can obtain imagesetter output by bringing a PostScriptfile to a service bureau. One reason that PostScript has become the standard for desktop publishing is that nearly all imagesetters support it. This means that you can produce drafts on an inexpensive PostScript laser printer with high assurance that the final output from an imagesetter will look the same, but with higher resolution (up to 3,540 dots per inch).
Printing on An Imagesetter Most documents that are printed professionally by a commercial printer are reproduced from master copies printed on an imagesetter.
