power factor correction
Last modified: Friday, September 26, 2008

Power factor correction (PFC) is a newer technology used in computer power supplies. PFC is applied to the circuits that include induction motors as a means of reducing the inductive component of the current and thereby reduce the losses in the supply. PFC has no effect on the operation of the motor itself.

This application note describes the theory of operation and step-by-step process to design a high performance Power Factor Corrected (PFC) power supply using the FAN4810 controller IC.

Advantages Using A Boost-Follower In a PFC Pre-Regulator (PDF)
Conventionally, PFC (power-factor corrected) off-line power converters are designed with two power stages: The first stage is typically a boost converter because that topology has continuous input current that can be shaped through the use of a multiplier, and average current mode control, to achieve near-unity power factor (PF.) However, the boost converter requires a higher output voltage than the input and requires a second converter to step this voltage down to a usable level.
